Green Energy to Lower Your Electric Bill

Now more than ever, with money being tight, people are turning to alternate energy sources. The phrase “go green” has a more significant meaning in these economic times. Not only is “going green” helping the environment, it’s also helping many save some green in their wallets.

Two very common ways to lower your electricity bill is using solar panels and wind turbines. Now I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures of some crazy high tech windmill farm or a Silicon Valley convention of the latest and greatest, but let me assure you, these are very easy and cost-efficient to get. However, if you were to get an estimate for a retail installation of solar panels and windmill systems for your home, it cost you in the tens of thousands. Now if you could just throw around ten grand, you probably wouldn’t be reading this. Thankfully, there’s a way to get those same solar panels and windmills for a fraction of the cost.

You are able to get those same solar panels and wind turbines for such a low cost if you make them yourself. I know they seem very complex and you probably have no idea how they work, let alone how to build one. Fortunately, you can easily make one of these alternate energy sources with the help of ‘earth4energy’. Creator of ‘earth4energy’, Michael Harvey, has been in the renewable energy industry for over 15 years and has written a guide to help you make these energy and money savers.

Harvey has written this manual in simple, easy-to-read English, with the novice in mind. In a single weekend you can have a solar panel or windmill up and running and generating your own electricity. Stop paying so much to the electric company and start saving with earth4energy today.

Green Tea: The Best Medicine for High Cholesterol?

It was reportedly discovered by a Chinese emperor some 40 centuries ago. And, legend has it, the discovery was purely by accident. But that coincidental discovery has improved the health of people around the world, who have turned to green tea in particular to help soothe their pains, improve their digestion, alleviate their depression, boost their immune system, and perhaps even lengthen their lives. But what is it that makes green tea so beneficial to human health?

The Ingredients of Success

Green tea is actually made up of a variety of ingredients. These include caffeine, vitamins, minerals, and oils. However, the most important ingredients are the polyphenols, especially one called EGCG, which is believed to improve health. In fact, it is the polyphenols which make green tea so much more effective than other beverages in fighting disease and illness.

Green Tea and Cholesterol

There have been some intriguing studies indicating that green tea can be effective in the fight against high cholesterol. Specifically, the beverage reduces “bad” cholesterol and boosts “good” cholesterol, improving an individual’s overall cholesterol profile.

In addition, green tea appears to lower overall cholesterol levels, helping to reduce one’s risk of developing heart disease. Similarly, green tea enhances cardiovascular health by improving the consistency of platelets in the blood.

Researchers have also found that green tea appears to protect against oxygen-induced damage to bad cholesterol. Drinking green tea also seems to enhance antioxidant processes in the bloodstream.

Effect of Green Tea on Blood Fats

In recent years, much attention has been focused on blood fats and the effects of diet and exercise on their consistency. In an interesting study conducted at the Department of Public Health at the National Defense Medical College in Saitama, Japan, researchers S. Kono, K. Shinchi, N. Ikeda, F. Yanai, and K. Imanishi investigated the impact of green tea consumption on blood fats, also known as serum lipids.

The study was published in an article entitled, “Tea Consumption and Serum Lipid Profiles: a Cross-Sectional Study in Northern Kyushu, Japan.”

Specifically, the researchers examined the correlation between green tea use and the serum lipid concentrations of more than 1300 men who underwent retirement health exams at the Self-Defense Forces Fukuoka Hospital between 1986 and 1988.

The researchers factored out variables such as alcohol use, use of tobacco, exercise levels, body mass index, and rank. They then discovered that the more green tea a patient drank, the lower his serum cholesterol levels. Men who drank nine or more cups of tea each day had total cholesterol levels that were eight mg/dl lower than those who drank two or fewer cups a day.

The serum cholesterol levels seemed to also decrease for men who ate a great deal of rice and soy beans, and increase for those who ate more Western foods. However, adjusting for these additional diet variables did not seem to affect the correlation between green tea use and total cholesterol levels.

Additional Evidence from the Animal Kingdom

It’s been said that there is a definite link between diet and exercise and coronary heart disease. Therefore, anything in the diet that improves serum lipid profiles should reduce the incidence of heart problems. It’s also known that green tea contains phytochemicals that work to decrease serum cholesterol as well as triglycerides.

In one animal study, 45 rats were subjected to a variety of treatments, including green tea. The study showed that consuming green tea improved the serum lipid profile by reducing total cholesterol, bad cholesterol, and trans fats. In addition, liver fat content decreased in rats that received a large amount of green tea.

Other Positive Effects of Green Tea Drinking

The polyphenols found in green tea may have some additional positive health effects. For instance, a number of animal and test tube studies indicate that these chemicals may have a substantial anti-cancer effect, especially in inhibiting the spread of melanoma, or skin cancer cells. Green tea has also been linked to a reduction in oral cancers and dental cavities.

In addition, green tea may stimulate the production of immune system cells. As a result, it can help the body fight bacteria, leading to improved overall health. In fact, one study showed that drinking ten or more cups of green tea each day could improve blood test results, protecting the body against liver damage.

How Much Green Tea is Enough?

Of course, you might be wondering how much green tea must be consumed in order to have a positive impact on health. In Asian nations, the typical tea drinker consumes about three cups each day–enough to provide as much as 320 mg of polyphenols. Nevertheless, some studies indicate as many as ten cups each day are needed in order to really make a difference in cholesterol levels and overall health.

Possible Side Effects

It should be noted that there can be some negative side effects associated with green tea consumption. While green tea is a relatively healthy drink, those who consume several cups of it each day may experience anxiety and insomnia brought on by the caffeine found in the beverage. Drinking green tea may also lead to iron deficiencies, since iron absorption in women may be reduced as much as 26 percent when green tea is consumed with a meal.

In addition, some drugs can interfere with green tea’s positive effects. Therefore, before switching to a diet rich in green tea, it may be best to check with a physician to determine if such a diet is right for you.

Looking to the Future

The forecast for green tea appears to be bright–as far as public health is concerned. Study after study seems to indicate that green tea can reduce cholesterol levels, combat cardiac disease, boost the immune system, and reduce the risk of cancer.

While additional study is needed in order to effectively harness all the benefits of green tea, it appears, for the moment, that simply adding a few cups of the brew to your daily diet can yield impressive health benefits.

How to Live a Green Lifestyle

Ten years ago, my life is just living in only three major places: school, home and church and with few things that I carry almost everyday: notebooks, books, bible and pens. I don’t eat too much junkfoods. I was not yet introduced to computer and mobile phone. There are no internet cafes but only rice fields with fruit trees where we usually spend our weekend with my churchmates. The weather was not yet too hot that time. We can walk under the sun even for several hours just to get to my friend’s farm and eat Mangosteen.

Now, the simple life has turned into a complicated, high tech and advanced lifestyle. I spend my weekends to the mall, internet cafes, coffee shop, cinema and eat in a fast food chain. I don’t go out of the house without a cellphone. I place my packed lunch in a plastic bag. I love junk foods. I usually eat canned foods or noodles because they are instant. I don’t go to farms anymore. I love shopping.

Is this your lifestyle? Always on the go? Fast moving? Time has turned into a fast-paced environment where boundaries are broken because of high technologies. Malls and fast food chains are rapidly growing. There is almost no time to stay at home and spend time with the family.

Is this lifestyle affects our environment?

Have you noticed that the weather is getting hotter? Or sometimes it’s uncertain. We don’t know when it rains. We can’t stay longer under the sun even with umbrellas, pity to those fieldworkers who don’t have other choice but to work under the sun. It is global warming, I say.

Yes, we always say, “Well, its global warming, you know?” But have we realized that each of us has contributed and will always contribute in this so called Global Warming, unless we practice green living?

If you are only conscious with your daily activities particularly on how much wastes you generate everyday, then you can eventually know how much you contribute to the climate change.

Because of the changing lifestyle, from simple to advanced and more complicated one, waste generation increased. If you are living in this present lifestyle, you are on estimate generating 1.5 kilogram of waste per day. When we multiply this per capita waste generation to thousands of people living in the cities, then imagine how much wastes we accumulate in a day. Most of these wastes can be found in fast food chains where we usually eat or take out food, in schools where students bring lunch in “styro pack” or plastic cellophanes, in cafeterias, internet cafes, cinemas where junkfoods are always eaten, or even in your home where you usually eat canned foods, noodles, or even prepared food from the market packed in a layered plastic bags, and during meetings and conventions where food is served with “throw-away” materials like straws, disposable cups and utensils and styro packs. All these wastes will just end to the waste bins. From the waste bins, where can they go? They can be at the dumpsite, along the streets and canals, or worse, they are burned. Isn’t this contributed to climate change, floods, water and air pollution?

If we are getting sick of the intolerable hot weather now and of the floods brought by just a short heavy rain, how much more in the future if we do not stop what we are doing since we changed our lifestyle? How about our sons and daughters and their next generation? Can we compromise their future with our unmanaged wastes?

If you are moving too fast, stop for a minute and take it slow… Observe your environment and learn where you can start living in an environment-friendly lifestyle.

Here are the simple tips you should start practicing. Make this a habit. Later, this will turn into lifestyle.

1. AVOID AND REDUCE WASTE

a. Avoid instant and processed foods. They are usually packed with Styrofoam and plastic that are not recyclable and are “throw-away” materials. Aside from that, they are not healthy.

b. When going shopping, use “green bag” instead of plastic bags. It is a reusable bag with a biodegradable material. Some malls provide you with shopping points when you use the bag.

c. When buying at the public market, you can also use the green bag or basket. If not, use lesser plastic bags as possible. You can place all types of vegetables in a plastic, fish in the other and meat in another plastic, so as not to have plastic for each item you buy. That will give you less waste when at home.

d. Minimize buying products in sachet. They produce more wastes than buying in bottle, which can be reused or recycled.

e. If you don’t need the plastic pack, don’t get it.

f. If you can drink without the straw, don’t ask for it.

2. SEGREGATE WASTES AT HOME

a. Prepare at least three waste receptacles for the biodegradable, recyclable and residual wastes.

b. Label the receptacles as necessary for you to familiarize the type of waste to put on that certain receptacle.

c. Throw your garbage properly to the receptacle where it should be thrown.

d. Segregate junk food wrappers, empty sachets and tetra packs. They can be made into recycled products.

3. REUSE

a. Reuse materials such as empty bottles, plastic or glass, either for same purpose or another.

b. Reuse plastic bag as container or receptacle before throwing it to the waste bin.

c. Wash the plastic cellophanes, especially those from the market, let it dry and keep for future use.

4. RECYCLE

a. Learn how to recycle wastes such as junk food wrappers, empty sachets and tetra packs.

b. If you do not have time to recycle, donate those wastes to students or relatives who have school project in recycling.

c. Sell recyclable materials to a nearby junk shop or ambulant junk buyer for additional income.

5. COMPOST BIODEGRADABLE WASTES

a. Have your own backyard composting that is made of low-cost materials such as bamboo, old GI sheets, cyclone wires or wooden slabs.

b. Learn how to do composting.

How to Lose Weight With Green Tea

Many people fall into the list of diet-trenders. If this is you, then you know you’ve already been identified. This distinction applies to anyone who jumps on the latest diet bandwagon, giving one trend or fad diet after another a quick shot before coming up empty-handed. With many people slightly overweight or worse, and society putting such heavy pressure on how we look, it’s easy to fall for the well-placed ads and high quality marketing speak designed to lure your attention.

Part of the problem lies in the substances that are being sold, many of which are not natural, while another part of the problem has to do with patience, and the realization that one must adopt a total plan of wellness, and not just a quick and easy diet method.

Along side these other potentially dangerous products sits green tea — natural, age-old and a strong component to a total health and wellness program, including weight loss. Correctly touted by professional doctors, wellness specialists and Oprah alike, the drink and its health benefits, including weight loss, are perfectly joined. The natural substance of green tea, when properly and consistently added into one’s diet, can yield numerous positive results, not in the least of which is the potential for weight loss. So how does green tea function as a potential enhancement to one’s diet?

The reality is that the tea aids the body in losing weight in a number of ways — many of which have to do with its direct impact on the body’s digestion. It assists in clearing the digestive system while simultaneously increasing metabolism, naturally. Some research even shows that green tea removes unwanted carbohydrates and excess calories, which can also assist in weight loss.

Using Green Tea to Lose Weight

Using the tea as a means to total health, including weight loss and dieting, is simple, and the means are varied. You could simply start by increasing your daily intake, adding between 4 and 5 cups per day. For some, this isn’t realistic and the cons out-weigh the pros of the situation (increased trips to the bathroom, lack of access to making tea at regular intervals throughout the day, the extra caffeine). But fear not — there are other successful dietary means by which you might leverage the health benefits of this tea, while avoiding any other unwanted effects.

This tea comes in capsule form, in addition to the standard liquid tea form, and can be the perfect way to increase daily intake while eliminating any of the practical side effects. Tea extract functions as a powerful antioxidant that aids in total health for anyone, and is usually found along side multi-vitamins and mineral supplements in a health or drug store. The elements in green tea extract that function as antioxidants are called polyphenols, or substances of plant origin that occur many fruits, vegetables and in all green teas.

Teas (and polyphenols found in tea) have been shown in tests to act like scavengers of oxygen and nitrogen-free radicals. By doing so, these polyphenols protect cell membranes, proteins and one’s DNA. The most important polyphenol isolated in green tea is called epigallocatechin (EGCG), which works to combat damage from the body that is a result of free radical damage, thereby promoting optimal health.

Combining the beneficial tea and all of its health benefits with regular exercise (minimum of thirty minutes per day), effective stress management and proper dieting can be the ideal solution for dieting needs.

Health Benefits of Drinking Green Tea

Counted among the various health benefits of this drink are such things as aiding digestion, improving eyesight and kidney function, increasing mental abilities, alleviating boredom and regulating or eradicating phlegm. More recently, there have been numerous studies wherein scientific proof now exists as to the potent capabilities to improve health and body function — that includes a serious reduction in the risk of developing lung cancer, heart disease or stomach cancer. All that from just four to five cups of green tea per day.

Much of the positive health affects that stem from the inclusion of green tea into one’s diet are the result of the flavonoid (or polyphenol) epicallocatechin gallate (as mentioned earlier — ECGC), which has been shown to fight cancer, uniquely, at all of its various stages. Studies have shown that ECGC is potentially one hundred times as powerful as vitamin C and several times more powerful than E.

It is free radicals that are believed to be the main contributor to cell damage in the human body — cell damage that can lead to illness, disease, infections, cancer and to aging in general. Free radicals are constantly being produced by the body, throughout all stages of the day and of one’s life, as they are the result of the body’s normal processes of creating energy and fighting off viruses, bacteria and other parasites. Further, pollution, toxins, stress, pesticides and other harmful substances expose the body to free radical damage.

This tea, long since a component of Chinese wellness programs through every day consumption, has been found to aid in many things for the body, including headaches and even depression. More and more scientific research in recent years has been adding substance to the claims that it has serious benefits to overall health. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute conducted an epidemiological study as far back as 1994, in which it was noted that green tea consumption helped to reduce cancer risk by almost 60%.

Additionally, in a study conducted at Purdue University, researchers discovered a chemical compound in the tea that stops cancer cell growth. Other research has shown that green tea aids in balancing the ratio of cholesterol in the body, lowering levels in the process. So thus far, evidence exists to support that the tea can have a positive impact on cancer, cholesterol, heart disease, arthritis, infection and the immune system.

Using Green Tea to Lose Weight

Research also exists to support the idea that green tea can improve one’s ability to lose weight. In 1999, a study was completed and the results were published out of the University of Geneva. It was noted in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that this tea and caffeine, in concert together, aided in an increase of calories burned.

Although the tea contains much less caffeine than coffee, nonetheless, it still contains caffeine, which can lead to a loss of sleep in some people. The alternative is to take the capsules, which can provide all of the positive benefits of the tea, without any drawbacks whatsoever.

The Factors That Set This Tea Apart When It Comes to Health Benefits

As stated earlier, it is the catechin polyphenols (namely the EGCG) that is beneficial as a powerful antioxidant, taken into the body specifically when drinking green tea. Unlike other standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, ECGC has been found to kill cancer cells without breaking down or killing other healthy body tissue. Because ECGC can aid the body in ceasing to form blood clots, there is a direct relationship between green tea and the prevention of stroke and heart attacks.

Unlike other tea cousins also deriving from the Camellia sinensis plant such as oolong and black, green tea is differentiated in that it goes through a much different process before it is ready for consumption. Producers exclusively first steam green tea leaves, preventing the EGCG element from getting oxidized. Black tea (and oolong as well) is in contrast fermented, leading to the conversion of the polyphenol in various other compounds, none of which is as powerful in its ability to promote health as ECGC.

Green Tea and Weight Loss: A Brief History

During a portion of the Ching Dynasty (1736 – 1796 AD) in China, Emperor Chien-lung supposedly employed a disguise and ventured into the Chinese country unnoticed with two of his ministers. Because the Emperor’s family line originated in the north, black and not green tea was his customary drink. During his trip into the countryside, he was offered green tea while traveling through the south-central portion of China, where green tea was more the norm. After first noting that the tea was without any taste, or so the lore has it, the Emperor later remarked that the tea was good. It was then that the king understood the taste benefits of the tea, and their subtle, slow release — it was only after a bit of time passed that one could take in the flavor and appreciate its pleasantness. Shortly thereafter, this tea replaced black tea in the palace.

Beyond that, there are accounts of its existence that date as far back into recorded history as five thousand years, based on Chinese legends. These include accounts of the original taster of the green tea leaf deciding it was delicious, and adding water to it to make a tea. Other stories, mostly unsubstantiated, reference different men sitting with cups of hot water when some green tea leaves fell into the water, thereby creating green tea. Whether or not any of the ancient stories are true, green tea has been consumed in China for thousands of years, its medicinal properties and benefits to health being acknowledged during those years.

With the average consumer rapidly discovering the positive effects of this tea, demand is on the rise, and slowly but surely, more markets are including green tea on their shelves. The tea and its tea extract as found in supplements are far too helpful to restoring the body’s complete health to not include them in one’s regular diet.

Going Green With Solar, Wind, Or Biofuels is Not Easy

History is slowly being made. A few years ago, and for the first time, the U.S. Senate included a “renewable energy” requirement for utilities in its energy bill. Unexciting as this may appear at first glance, the bill, after passing the House, required most utility companies that now generate power by burning fossil fuels to produce 10% of their power from “renewable,” or “green” sources such as solar energy, wind, geothermal wells, methane gas from landfills, and biomass from farms by the year 2020. Hydro-electric and nuclear energy sources were not included.

To date, only 14 states have had enough foresight to adopt voluntary renewable energy requirements for utilities, ranging from 1% in Arizona to 30% in Maine. Those states should be given the recognition they deserve, because being “green” is not as easy as it sounds.

Consider JEA, the city-owned utility of Jacksonville, Florida that volunteered in 1998 to provide 7.5% of its power by “green” energy sources within 20 years. The utility’s first foray into renewable energy began with Arundo donax, a bamboo-like plant. JEA contracted with Biomass Industries Inc. of Gulf Breeze, Florida to grow 12,000 acres of Arundo. The plan was to shred and compost the plant, producing methane gas that would be burned to provide very clean energy for consumers at a price competitive with coal.

The very organizations expected to support the Arundo project turned out to be its antagonists. Environmental groups were worried that Arundo, a fast-growing plant native to the Mediterranean, would endanger Florida’s indigenous vegetation. Florida’s Sierra Club chapter asked JEA not to cultivate any more of the plant.

One might think that Florida, with its abundance of sunshine, could rely on solar energy to provide a significant share of pollution-free energy. It would, if not for the fact that solar energy research and development has not been given the attention it deserves in the U.S., with the result that energy produced from solar technologies, even in sunny states like Florida, costs 10 times more to produce than energy from fossil fuel sources, preventing it from becoming a serious contender in the area of “green” energy.

Wind-power is also being considered by JEA, with the hope of building a wind-turbine farm along Florida’s gusty topographies. But the utility may face opposition to this technology as well, believe it or not. In Massachusetts, for example, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound is fighting the establishment of a 170-unit wind-turbine farm five miles off-shore, because they feel it would “industrialize” the area, and therefore degrade fishing, relaxation, and tourism. Senator Kennedy supported the ban on wind-turbines in Nantucket Sound, deeply disappointing vast numbers of his long-time supporters who felt bitterly betrayed by his position.

JEA is now looking into the possibility of planting trees on its own land, followed by fertilization with sewage. This program has the double advantage of cleaning up local rivers while developing a source of wood chips that could be used to produce power more cleanly than fossil fuel combustion.

Where wind is plentiful in coastal areas and Midwestern states, perhaps wind power will turn out to be the short-term winner in the race to produce clean energy. It is quiet, 100% pollution-free, and already able to compete with fossil fuels on a cost basis. Apparently, more people need to view high-tech wind turbines as an interesting and aesthetically pleasing technology. Once the costs have come down, solar energy may come into its own. If utilities can find suitable plants that don’t offend local environmental groups, biomass may also make significant contributions to clean energy. There are many people who feel that the pieces of the clean-energy puzzle are here and that we need to figure out how to put them together. The biggest long-term winners will be the environment and the quality of life derived from cleaner air, water, and soil.

Green Tea As A Diet Supplement

Green Tea is unfermented tea meaning that the leaves used for green tea are steamed soon after being plucked in order to retain freshness. In this respect, green tea helps maintain the overall well-being of the body. Antioxidants in green tea can boost immunity, preserve young-looking skin, and brighten the eyes. The fermentation process destroys most of the EGCG in the tea leaves. Green tea first gained notice as a health preserver because of the much lower incidence of heart disease and cancer in Asian countries, where green tea is a staple.

Weight

Almost everyone out here is looking for a solution to battle the bulge. Thermogenesis in the body is the rate which the body burns calories. Green tea results in an increase of energy which raises the metabolism, therefore, more weight is lost than normal. A safer alternative for people wanting to lose weight are green tea diets. Losing weight is an important dream aspired by millions of people worldwide.

Benefits

The research of this ancient beverage continues, and it may take decades to unlock all of the secrets it holds. Although green tea should not be considered to be a magic bullet, researchers agree the positive health benefits are very promising. There are many health benefits associated with having a green tea diet. Although this type of diet has a reputation for boosting health, scientific proofs of its health benefits are still somewhat mixed. In this scientist’s opinion, green tea is well worth your consideration. The simple speculation of benefits is enough to get excited about it. Despite its stronger color and flavor, black tea cannot come close to green tea as far as health benefits are concerned. One of the reasons that green tea has become so popular is that there are believed to many health benefits which can be obtained by regular drinking. These benefits are also reported to exist in Oolong and are retained even after the tea is processed. There are many health benefits associated with having a green tea diet. One of these green tea diet benefits is preventing cancer. One of the other benefits is that green tea is very good for arthritis sufferers.

Health

Obesity has become one of the major health issues in our society today. I hope that after reading this article you will include a cup of green tea in your daily ratio. After all it is a rare case when something that good for our health can be also that delicious. If you suffer from any form of irritable bowel disease, it’s a good idea to give green tea a try. It has no side effects and is well tolerated by most people, regardless of their health issues. That’s why despite being so beneficial people still avoid and go in for pills and drugs which are accompanied with array of side effects. So your health is in your hands and takes a wise step in order to have happy and healthy living.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants, green tea is loaded with antioxidants that support your bodies immune system and helps eliminate harmful toxins from your body. These powerful antioxidants are so potent that research is showing that they might even be able to cure cancer. While it is already common knowledge that green tea has several health benefits, modern scientists were able to provide several concrete proofs of the positive effects of Chinese tea. Its antioxidants are said to be the ones responsible for making the tea very beneficial. More good news is it’s not just green tea and cholesterol; it’s also green tea and cancer. Chinese green tea antioxidants are said to be the ones responsible for making the Chinese green tea very beneficial. It will help the body to protect cells from free radicals (unstable molecules found in our cells). This antioxidants will neutralize the free radicals. A native to Asia, green tea is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are ready and waiting not only in teas but also in several fruits, vegetables, nuts, meats, and even wines (see my health benefits of wine article). While it is already common knowledge that green tea has several health benefits, modern scientists were able to provide several concrete proofs of the positive effects of Chinese tea. Lowers blood sugar (polyphenols and polysaccharides are the two main antioxidants are especially effective in lowering blood sugar).

This problem has been addressed through the usage of green tea extract. What’s really amazing is that it wasn’t until recently that research has discovered just how incredibly powerful the health benefits of green tea are. Green tea has been thought to promote oral health (although scientific proof was difficult to come by here, too). How much green tea is enough to reap the benefits. Green tea is one of the best drink available today. Green tea is a great topic to discuss and it has become increasingly. Women who drink green tea are less likely to have recurrences of breast cancer after treatment. And most important of all, women who consume green tea are 50% less likely to develop breast cancer at all.

Green Carpet Cleaning

Everything’s gone green. Who could have guessed that the color of envy would become the most popular color of our times? I guess the blues never really stood a chance. Even the carpet cleaning industry is leaning towards the eco-friendly side of things. More and more carpet cleaning companies are using organic cleaning solutions and practicing eco-friendly cleaning techniques.

But even with everything going eco-friendly there is a misconception that green cleaning products and green cleaning practices aren’t as effective as their chemically based brethren. This simply is not true. Here’s some info on green carpet cleaning that won’t leave you singing the blues.

First of all, back in the day, almost all cleaning products were simple and mostly non-toxic. They didn’t have all the chemicals that are around today. Depending on your age, mom, or grandma, used solutions made by mixing water and vinegar or baking soda to do a lot of cleaning. These same products can be used today to take care of most carpet stains and cleaning needs.

A mixture of water and vinegar can be used to remove rust spots in your carpet. Ammonia and cold water can be used to get out blood. A mild soap and water mixture can help with urine if treated immediately. If the urine has been in the carpet over 24 hours then you can use the vinegar and water. Most food and drink products can be removed with a simple solution of warm water, mild detergent, and vinegar.

Many carpet companies are now using cleaning agents that are based on more natural elements rather than harmful chemicals. Non-toxic ingredients such as citrus, vinegar, and salt, are now being used more often than their toxic counterparts. This isn’t saying that all the chemicals used by carpet companies are 100% chemical free. But they are much safer and a great deal less toxic than the alternatives.

Not only are the cleaning agents more eco-friendly, the cleaning methods are now getting greener. Today’s high tech world has given us updated tools and more efficient cleaning equipment that are less wasteful. Steam cleaners use less water but offer the same, if not better results. There are also “dry” cleaning techniques that use almost no water at all.

The green movement is very trendy right now and it seems that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. But if you had the choice between a safe, non-toxic cleaning and a more hazardous option, which would you choose? The bottom line is that traditional carpet cleaning products and techniques can be harmful and wasteful. Wouldn’t you prefer to have a safer home environment for you and your family if the option were available to you?

Will Green Hard Drives Go the Distance?

As Joel Hruska from Ars Technica says, green is the new black in the IT industry. Everything is going green, from data centres to hard drives, and IT companies are doing their utmost to be seen as part of the environment solution and not part of the problem. Hard drive manufacturer, Western Digital, got into the game a while ago with its line of efficient GreenPower hard drives. They have recently extended their range with the launch of the new enterprise storage division: RE2-GP. The RE2-GP drives come in three sizes: 500GB, 750GB and 1TB.

With all the hype and activity surrounding the rush to go green, Hruska questioned whether all developments were effective and delivered on their promises, or whether companies were simply climbing on the bandwagon and sticking a “green” label on their products. Happily, in Western Digital’s case, it appears as though they are the real deal.

Western Digital’s new drives make use of three different systems, which work in conjunction to make the RE2-GP up to 40% more efficient than their competitors, without sacrificing performance or reliability. They also claim that while in use, the RE2-GP uses 4 to 5W less power than competitors’ hard drives.

The three systems which make up the RE2-GP are: IntelliPower, which manages the transfer rate, spin speed and caching algorithms; IntelliPark, which controls the drive heads, and reduces drag by moving them off the disk while the entire system is idle; and IntelliSeek, which calculates exactly how fast the drive heads need to move for the system to function continuously. The drive heads then move at the optimum speed and no faster, which reduces power consumption.

Western Digital estimates that the biggest power savings will be seen in data centres, where companies can expect to save $10 (R70-80) per RE2-GP drive installed. In sum, large companies that make use of multiple hard drives can save tens of thousands of dollars per year (or hundreds of thousands of Rands).

Western Digital’s GreenPower drives and RE2-GP systems were reviewed by The Tech Report, which reported that they are as power efficient as they claim to be. This is good news for green computing endeavours on the whole, as various companies’ efforts are vindicated and technology is proved to work just as well as traditional computing methods. It also encourages other companies to give green a try, which is essential in driving competition and the evolution of technology. Only time will tell if these efforts stand up to the demands of consumers in the long-term, but the important thing is that, for the moment, steps are being taken to address a pressing environmental problem.
