Green solutions for the small planet.

not to include green tea

Green tea is getting a ton of attention these days as medical research is finally catching up to naturopathic/alternative medicine. Due to the frequent lack of convincing research in alternative medicine, many potentially health-promoting or disease-fighting nutritional supplements are dismissed as viable options for treatment or prevention in mainstream clinical practice. This unfortunate, as many currently available therapies (i.e.drugs) are synthetic small-molecule compounds which are often associated with a number of adverse or potentially lethal effects. In an effort to treat or cure a disease we are affecting a number of other important biochemical processes to our detriment. It would seem that naturally derived products have the greatest potential in the prevention of disease, to use “food as a drug” as nature has most likely intended. Times are changing however, as modern science is proving more and more that treatments previously passed off as “snake oil” are actually powerful health promoting and disease-preventing agents.

Consumed for thousands of years as part of traditional Chinese medicine, green tea was to consider a health-promoting beverage. Traditional Chinese medicine has recommended green tea for headaches, aches and pains, depression, as an energy-promoting agent, detoxification, and in general to promote a long, healthful life. Once again, current medical research is beginning to catch up with ancient medical practice, as green tea is proving to be beneficial to health and fitness in a number of unexpected ways. It seems that the ancient Chinese medicine assertion that green tea “promotes health” is not far off from what researchers are beginning to uncover. Recent human research studies have suggested green tea may have the following beneficial effects:

  • Reduction in the risk for cardiovascular disease
  • Reduction in the risk for certain types of cancer
  • Promotion of oral health
  • Bodyweight control and improvements in body composition
  • Antibacterial and antiviral activity
  • Protection from harmful UV rays
  • Associated with increases in bone mineral density
  • protection form neruodegenerative diseases

The chemical composition of green tea is extremely complex, the potentially health-promoting compounds including the amino acids teanine, 5-Nethylglutamine, glutamic acid, tryptophan, glycine, serine, aspartic acid, tyrosine, valine, leucine, threonine, arginine, lysine, polyphenols, carbohydrates such as fructose, glucose, and fructose, lipids including EFAs, various plant sterols (hormone-like compounds present in plants), caffeine and theophylline, pigments such as chlorophyll and carotenoids, and trace-minerals such as calcium, magnesium, chromium, manganese , iron, copper, zinc, selenium, among others. It is likely that with the health-promoting and disease-preventing effects of green tea, as with many other natural products, the sum is greater than the whole. All the constituents of green tea likely act in a synergistic manner, at the right time and at the right place (biochemically speaking), just as nature intended. Read on to find out what we know about green tea and how it can benefit your health.

Antioxidant activity

The polyphenols present in green have generated lots of interest by researchers, as polyphenols, a large class of compounds found in plants, are antioxidants which have been associated with decreased risk of a number of diseases. The particular array of polyphenols in green tea has been shown to have extremely potent antioxidant activity, most likely associated with the reduction in cancer risk and cardiovascular disease. One of the particular polyphenol compounds in green tea, a catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant in addition to having potent anticarcinogenic and anti-lipogenic activity. Also present in green tea are carotenoids, tocopherols, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and minerals such as Cr, Mn, Se or Zn. Important anti-oxidants in their own right, it is likely that the presence of these non-phenolic antioxidants can actually support the anti-oxidant activity of the polyphenols in green tea, acting in a synergistic manner. Extensive research has on the antioxidant effects of green tea has shown that when combined with a balanced diet, the consumption of green tea on a daily basis can protect against oxidative damage so intimately associated with aging and disease.

Energy-promoting/fat burning effects

Green has been associated for some time with fat loss and improvements in body composition, most like attributed to the caffeine and theophylline content. Contrary to the any anti-caffeine propaganda you may have encountered, caffeine has been shown time and time again to promote lipolysis (i.e fat burning). Theophylline acts synergistically with caffeine to promote its effects, and additionally opens up the airway (theophylline was often prescribed as an asthma treatment years ago). While the caffeine and theophylline are certainly involved in the fat-burning ability of green tea, there are other mechanisms by which green tea encourages fat loss and decreased body fat storage. In vitro studies using both mouse and human preadipocytes (basically “precursor” fat cells) have shown that the EGCG in green tea not only inhibits adipogenesis (differentiation to a mature fat cell), but also causes the fat cells to die! While in-vitro studies rarely correlate nicely with in vivo effects, many studies have shown that in humans, green tea promotes body fat loss and thermogenesis by mechanisms independent of those attributed to its caffeine and theophylline content; most likely involving the catechin EGCG. It is likely that the combination of caffeine, theophylline, and EGCG act in a synergistic manner to induce weight loss and fat-burning. While there is no definitive amount of green tea needed to induce its weight loss and fat burning effects, EGCG has been shown to accumulate over time and we already know the half-lives of caffeine and theophylline. A good recommendation for the amount of green tea needed to elicit weight loss and all of the other reported benefits would be 2-3 6-ounce servings/day.

Anti-carcinogenic effects

While there are certain genetic mutations that can pre-dispose or even guarantee that a person with get a certain type of cancer in their life-time, cancer is mostly associated with lifestyle and aging. If a person lives an unhealthy lifestyle associated with lack of exercise and a poor diet, there is a much higher incidence of cancer. It seems that there is strong link between oxidative damage and cellular aging, with greater oxidative damage occurring in the context of an unhealthy lifestyle. A new approach in cancer prevention research is to find dietary components that are capable of slowing cellular aging and carcinogenesis without affecting the normal growth of healthy cells. Countless in-vitro, animal studies, and epidemiological studies in humans have shown that green tea has a strong anticarcinogenic effect, both in the prevention of cancer in the first place and the inhibition or cancer cell growth and proliferation. This evidence has been so convincing that the National Cancer Institute has initiated a plan to utilize agents found in tea to develop chemo-preventative agents in human clinical trials. It seems that the cancer-inhibiting activity of green tea may extend far beyond it anti-oxidant activity, as green tea has also been impacted in the activation of detoxifying enzymes, an anti-inflammatory effect, and it seems that one or a number of components may directly inhibit cancer cell growth possibly even initiate apoptosis (programmed cell death, an abnormal cell will usually “commit suicide” to avoid becoming cancerous- cancer has the acquired ability to avoid this process, allowing it to proliferate)

Cardiovascular disease risk

Ancient Chinese medicine has used green tea extensively for its blood-pressure reducing effects and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. While the mechanism behind these effects is not currently understood, they are most likely associated with the polyphenol-induced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of green tea. Animal studies have shown that green tea polyphenols, particularly EGCG, are associated with a decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol) and total cholesterol levels. Any agent that acts to raise the HDL to LDL ratio is cardio-protective, preventing the formation of atherosclerotic lesions (buildup of plaque in the arteries which eventually causes blockage resulting in stroke or heart attack). Uncontrolled oxidation is also associated with atherosclerosis; it seems that the polyphenols found in green tea promote cardiovascular health through a number of mechanisms. We have yet to show many of these mechanisms at work in humans, but epidemiological studies have shown time and time again that green tea show similar cardio-protective effects in humans to those seen in animals.

Summing it up…

Green tea has been shown to have a wide variety of significant health-promoting effects in humans, animals, and in vitro cell culture. The polyphenols present in green tea, particularly the catechin EGCG, have been shown to have anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties in addition to preventing cardiovascular disease and promoting weight loss. It is no mystery that health and fitness are two intimately related concepts; with greater fitness comes greater health and vice-versa. Anything we can do, whether it is through exercise, weight loss, diet, or supplement intake, to influence either of these will be sure to promote a long, healthy life. Pharmaceuticals, although necessary, are not without their problems. If diseases could be prevented before dangerous pharmaceuticals are needed to treat them, the collective health of our society would increase exponentially. We may never be able to cure certain diseases with our current approaches; until we refine our techniques so that viable cures can be discovered with approaches such as gene therapy, the “cure” lies in prevention, not treatment of disease. With natural, health-promoting agents in addition to a healthy diet and exercise program we can conceivably prevent diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease before they occur. You cannot have fitness without health, and green tea has been shown to increase fitness and health at the same time. With all of the proven benefits, there lacks any good reason not to include green tea as a supplement in your diet and nutrition program; 2-3 6-ounce servings per day should be sufficient to reap all of its benefits for health and fitness.

Green Gifts Don’t Have to Be Dull Gifts

We are all being told about the impact we have on our environment and increasingly we are becoming more conscious of our actions and lifestyle choices. Part of this is what we buy as a consumer not just for ourselves but for other people too.

When it comes to birthdays and Christmas presents many of us are reluctant to push green products and eco friendly gifts on other people but buying somebody a green gift doesn’t mean it has to be dull.

There are plenty of fantastic green gift ideas that regardless of being eco-friendly are fun, innovative and make great presents for nearly every member of the family.

One of the best places to start is the garden. Not only are there great gift ideas for the green gardener like composters and raised planting beds but there are other garden ideas for kids too. wormeries are fantastic fun for the younger children while solar garden lighting help those patio parties swing way into the evening.

Around the home and office there are no shortage of gift ideas either. From pure wool duvets for those cosy warm nights cuddled up to quick cup kettles and recycled clocks, there is a great gift idea for almost everybody.

Eco friendly doesn’t have to be low tech either. There are many great green innovations, from water powered calculators, magnoballs for removing limescale to clock work radios with inbuilt cell phone chargers and various solar powered gadgets that are both useful and green.

So whether its father’s day, a birthday, anniversary or wedding, don’t be frightened of thinking green when it comes to buying a gift, you may find not just a great eco-gift but a great gift full stop.

Health Insurance, Defiant Hair and Traffic Lights – A Disgruntled Writer Shares a List of Grievances

When feeling irritable, it often helps to dump all over those closest to you. However if they are not around or tired of listening, there is always the trusted Mercury reader to complain to. The intention behind this diatribe is entirely self serving. First, I have a genuine desire to air my dirty laundry before the entire community and I hope you will commiserate with me. Second, I could not think of anything else to write about this week, so bear with me as I venture through my list of gripes and grievances.

New pants often have a sales tag sewn into the waistline on the back side of the apparel, with thread a different color than the remainder of the garment. These tags clearly must be removed before the pants can be worn. Perhaps I am mentally challenged, but I find it incredibly difficult to pull those threads out of the fabric.

Case in point: I recently found myself on a weekday morning, fresh out of the shower and running late for work, armed with a pair of eyebrow tweezers in one hand and scissors in the other as I struggled to extract tiny white threads from the waistline of a pair of black slacks. I picked at the fabric for what felt like an eternity only to surrender in despair.

Determined to wear my new pants, I felt compelled to tie a sweater around my waist to hide the frayed material and ugly threads, now more visible than before after being tugged at relentlessly with a pair of eyebrow tweezers. I tend to tie sweaters around my waist most days anyway, but usually the purpose is to hide my rear end, not my apparently compromised IQ when faced with thread removal. I am unclear as to why the manufacturer does not use thread the same color as the pants. For example, with black pants, why not use black thread? If anyone has an answer, please contact me at risamason68@comcast.net

I will now shift gears and introduce you to my theory on drive-through windows. I have two points to emphasize on this issue. First, drive-through lines are always ridiculously lengthy, and I cannot figure out why, especially when there is nobody waiting on line at the counter inside the venue. Second, on the rare occasion that I am lazy enough to forsake time efficiency in favor of the comfort and convenience of my vehicle, I inevitably find myself parked behind a monster sized SUV with a frustrated mother and half a soccer team inside. Again, if anyone has some insight regarding this issue, please contact me at risamason68@comcast.net

The next topic to be covered is human hair. Why does human hair love to defy the laws of gravity? If you push it down, it pops back up. If you try to curl it, it falls down flat. If you iron it straight, it immediately turns frizzy. By the time we stop caring what we look like, the hair either turns gray, falls out, or both. Then there are the lucky ones, who never have a single hair out of place, despite the weather, season, or time of day. Personally, I begin and end each day looking like bozo the clown after being electrocuted. Why don’t dogs have this problem? Any suggestions from the perfect hair people would be greatly appreciated; please forward all helpful advice to above email address.

Traffic Light Theory: You can pretty much bet your life on this theory. If you are running late, in a terrible hurry, lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood to the point of panic, or desperate to find a bathroom immediately, all lights will turn red. Alternatively, if you are unfashionably early, headed someplace you really don’t want to go with plenty of time to spare, anxious to find an essential item buried under mounds or junk on your passenger seat, or dying to take a bite of the juicy cheeseburger still fully wrapped and balanced between your knees as you drive (the one you hungrily anticipated while waiting forever behind a monstrous SUV on a drive-through line), all lights will invariably turn green.

Health Insurance: I know I am not alone with this particular problem. I am 5 foot 5, 107 pounds, a non-smoker, exercise regularly, and have never been hospitalized, required surgery, or undergone treatment for a serious medical condition. I take a daily multi-vitamin, try to eat healthy, and feel quite well most of the time.

Being self-employed, I have not filed an insurance claim in many years, as all my medical bills are out of pocket expenses. However thanks to a trusted friend known as the MIB (Medical Information Board), my recent attempt to purchase an individual health insurance policy led to my discovery that I am in fact suffering from several ongoing medical conditions that my doctor never told me about.

Thanks MIB, I appreciate your highly conscientious record keeping. If I am a high risk candidate for an insurance policy, I suppose only the unborn fetus would be considered low risk, as it has not yet experienced the dangers of hangnails and stuffy noses. All questions and concerns can be directed to http://www.MIB.com If you are fortunate, you can also be declined health insurance or robbed blind, and as an added bonus, you can discover all your secret ailments that the MIB has carefully documented for you.

Following is Dr. Risa’s simple theory about health insurance: If you are sick and in dire need of health insurance, you can’t have it. If you are well and in need of health insurance, the MIB will find you and inform you that you are in fact sick. If you are self employed, uninsured and relatively healthy, prepare to remain uninsured and relatively healthy, avoid heavy objects careening out of windows, or sell your home and pitch a tent on the beach. If you are self employed, uninsured, and seriously ill, consider the following:

- Seek employment with a large corporation immediately and enjoy the benefits of your new group policy.

- Start your own business, find a minimum of 15 friends to employ, and apply for a group policy together.

- Find a very wealthy friend and be exceptionally nice to them.

- Plan your funeral. The money you save on expensive medical treatments can be used for a nice casket.

- Move to Canada, Europe, or Central America.

Pleasure Theory: If it brings you pleasure, it will make you fat, give you cancer, lead you into debt, or cause you to lose self respect and social standing in the community. It feels bad, boring, painful, or frustrating or causes you dread, it is healthy, respectable, necessary, imperative, the “right thing to do” or required of you on a daily basis. To simplify, just remember my cardinal rule: Feels good- you can’t have it; fees bad-you are stuck with it. Nothing is certain but death, taxes, weight gain, dental visits, desk clutter, dirty laundry, and paperwork.

Finally, here is my parting request for all of you loyal Mercury readers. When you contact the MIB to request a confidential listing of your medical conditions (the ones your doctor forgot to inform you about), please don’t tell them that when I was twelve, I accidentally bit my tongue while attempting to eat a frozen snicker’s bar. I am still trying to apply for a policy and I really don’t want to mess things up.

Why You Need a Green MLM Or Home Based Business For Your Health And Wealth

I was reading Health Magazine at the gym this morning and came across the most incredible article. I was pedaling away on the elliptical machine and my eyes could not read the information fast enough. I knew that being environmentally conscious was important but I had no idea about the dangers of what we are putting into our bodies and the bodies of our children from products I deemed “safe.” The article appeared to present an unbiased view I found compelling. It went on to cite reputable studies done by the EPA, University of Texas at Austin, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as well as many endocrine specialists. It can be found in the September 2009 issue of Health Magazine. But, it caused me to really think.

I currently have an environmental MLM home based business which has taught me to be more aware of things in our everyday foods, cleaners, and even water. It’s very important both for your health and for your wealth to pick a home based business or MLM that focuses on healthful, organic products. MLM or home based businesses that capitalize on environmentally conscious products generally include training on how to live green, healthfully, and longer. A green MLM or home based business also has the benefit of being part of one the largest movements we will experience in our lifetimes. Thus, by choosing one you are doing something to make you and your family healthier and wealthier, supporting an important movement, and sending an important message.

Well, I knew the importance of going green but what I didn’t know was that the pesticides and herbicides that seek into our tap water interfere with the estrogen in our body. But, you can avoid this buy buying a water filtration system. We purchased one through our home based business and now enjoy chlorine free, filtered water. My entire family has noticed a difference in the quality of our hair and in the disappearance of skin disorders such as eczema. To learn if the products you currently use are safe visit CosmeticsDatabase.com.

Reading my Health Magazine painted a grim picture about cleaning products. Those fresh, flowery smells in your cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and body soaps and lotions are part of a class of endocrine disruptors. Exposure to them causes hormone disruption and genital abnormality in baby boys whose mothers were exposed. It also caused lower sperm count. Switch to green cleaning products, soaps, lotions and eliminate the dangerous effects on your health. Plus, they work, smell good, and I love them. You are also sending an important message by supporting companies who make and sell green products.

Did you know that 6 billion pounds of bisphenol A (BPA) is produced each year and that 93 percent of Americans ages 6 and older have BPA in their blood? BPA in plastics was publicized as dangerous for the first time several years ago. Now, baby bottles and sports cups are made BPA free. To protect yourself, do not put plastics in the microwave or dishwasher since that increases the chemical getting leached into your water and food. Better yet, throw away your plastics and use glass or ceramic. I did! We now use BPA free baby bottles and pacifiers for my 4 month old. We disposed of our plastic Tupperware and purchased glass storage containers which end up being much more convenient since I can reheat foods right in the container.

Who knew that the hormones in meat contribute to early puberty in girls? Cattle are injected with hormones and the body absorbs them when you eat the meat. But, you can avoid this by buying organic, hormone free meats. If your funds limit the amount of hormone free, organic foods you can purchase make sure to put meats to the top of your list. Another way to bring more green into your life, both by way of safer products and by way of more money, is to pick a home based business or MLM with a green focus. You will be able to hit your monthly minimums by purchasing healthy, safe products.

Along with many modern day conveniences comes mind blowing repercussions. It’s no wonder autism and cancer rates are soaring. I take comfort in knowing that there are some simple steps each of us can take to ensure our bodies, and the bodies of our children, are not filled with mercury, hormones, and endocrine disruptors that respected studies say cause cancer, early puberty, and birth defects. So, join in the movement to go green and bring in the green. It will make you live longer, healthier and wealthier!

You Won’t Believe Who is Calling For an H-1B Visa Tax

As I have written extensively in 2009, the climate of fear in the US and indeed the world, is causing a new wage of anti foreigner and anti immigrant mentality all over the world.

From Australia to Canada to the UK and of course the mighty USA, countries who have exploded in economic growth and prosperity in recent times (not to mention the last 100 years) because of immigrant labor are now turning on those same people.

Studies from all these countries show that Immigrants work far harder, are better educated, spend less time at work idle and illegal work conditions aside, still get paid far less than their local counterparts.

So an economic mess and downright corruption caused by the local members of the population both at executive levels of corporations and in government is being blamed on immigrant workers who toiled without great reward for many years.

Now the founder of LinkedIn Reid Hoffman of all people while stating that the H-1B program should be expanded, gives an immediate slap in the face stating a 10% payroll tax should be imposed on companies that hire foreign workers.

(I guess that means LinkedIn is off the list of companies to apply to for Immigrants this year!)

These taxes are supposed to go to US re-education programs in his opinion. Of course nothing is said for the hundreds and thousands of dollars paid in H-1B application fees by the employer already earmarked for this exact purpose.

How are small businesses already inundated with an economic downturn and taxes supposed to come up with an extra 10% to benefit from the amazing foreign expertise.

Expertise that according to a study by Vivek Wadhwa at Harvard pioneered American tech companies that employed more than 450,000 workers and grossed $52 billion in 2005 alone. Imagine the taxes and the flow on effect that wealth created for the US economy at large all because of the toil and ingenuity of the immigrant worker.

Now one of the most common routes to a Green Card is via the H-1B visa (or these days E-3 visa as well) which allows the employer to file a petition on behalf of the non-immigrant visa holder to sponsor them for permanent residency and thus a green card.

Already USCIS Ombudsman noted in his 2007 annual report to Congress that the nation has a “perpetual backlog” of employment-based green card applications. This backlog means that even green cards that should be available aren’t used. If green cards are not issued in the year they are authorized, they are lost. In 2006, more than 10,000 employment-based green cards were lost, even though the immigration service had almost 150,000 applications waiting to be processed. Since 1994, almost a quarter of million employment-based green cards have been lost because the immigration service isn’t processing enough applications in a timely manner.

As you can see the Immigrant is getting ripped off at every point in the process and still generating wealth for the US while being blamed for her problems.

Right at this point the Green Card prospects for potential workers to the US are low because the avenue to get a work visa is becoming harder in these times.

However there are answers and information out there and just like the immigrants for hundreds of years toiled before you through tough times, you can do the same and achieve your dreams for you and your family!

Green Marketing Starts With These 3 Steps

Step 1 – Admit the Problem.

Thinking of going green with your Marketing?

Is “Green” Just a Fad?

Going “green” is nothing new. Long before the recent trends people have been trying to use healthier alternatives to toxin latent products for decades. In fact I have been using “green” products for most of my life. My question is very simple.

Is going Green just a fad or is it really the right thing to do?

Whether or not you have concerns of Global Warming or Green House Gases I believe that using environmentally friendly products (not just house hold cleaners) is the right thing to do, always.

Below are just of the few statistics I have rounded up. Some are very shocking.

  • The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years.
  • About 110 million Americans live in areas with levels of air pollutants the federal government considers to be harmful.
  • Americans dump 16 tons of sewage into their waters–every minute of every day.
  • Although water covers two-thirds of the surface of the Earth, all the fresh water in lakes, streams, and rivers represents only one-hundredth of the Earth’s total water.
  • Each year, 1 million sea birds, 100,000 marine mammals, and 50,000 fur seals are killed as the result of eating or being strangled in plastic.
  • Americans throw away 25 billion Styrofoam coffee cups every year, and 2.5 million plastic beverage bottles every hour.
  • Americans throw away about 40 billion soft drink cans and bottles every year. Placed end to end, they would reach to the moon and back nearly 20 times.
  • Eighty-four percent of a typical household’s waste–including food scraps, yard waste, paper, cardboard, cans, and bottles–can be recycled.
  • Using recycled paper for one print run of the Sunday edition of the New York Times would save 75,000 trees.
  • If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25 million trees a year.
  • Each year, 40 million acres of tropical rain forests–an area larger than the state of California–are destroyed through logging or burning.
  • Only 10 percent of the 35,000 pesticides introduced since 1945 have been tested for their effects on people.

With so many options for “Going Green” today and many of those products are so economical there really is no reason not to try. Go and find anything and make a difference. I be live that the small act of scouring the sink can be apart of the giant act of saving the world.
